East of Hollywood is a short-form mockumentary that exposes the stereotypes Asian-American actors are forced to deal with throughout the audition process and features a talented, multi-cultural cast from the greater Boston area. The film draws from real experiences encountered by Tow and fellow Asian-American actors throughout their careers.

Followed by a panel discussion with:

  • Moderator: Jeannie Suk, Professor of Law at Harvard Law School
  • Chris Caccioppoli, writer/director, East of Hollywood
  • Michael Tow, producer/actor, East of Hollywood, Chinglish (Lyric Stage)
  • Celeste Oliva, actor, East of Hollywood, Chinglish, Becky's New Car, and Rich Girl (Lyric Stage)
  • Theresa Nguyen, actor, Fast Company and Water by the Spoonful (Lyric Stage)

Michael Tow, whose credits include Chinglish at the Lyric Stage, and the films Unfinished Business, Royal Pains, R.I.P.D., and Daredevil, leads the cast as Ken Chang, a fourth-generation American who enrolls in “Orientalification” classes to secure a spot on a network TV series.  Learning Mandarin, practicing martial arts, and thickening his fake accent prepare Ken for his coveted role as a bodega owner on Kung Fu Mom, whose titular character is played by Boston native and Baywatch star, Traci Bingham.   The film makes reference to numerous instances of Asian-American stereotyping in film history and leverages the fictitious Tow/Bingham relationship to poke fun at the infamous lack of romance between Jet Li and Aaliyah in Romeo Must Die.
